TO LIV(E) Asian Cinema

Actress Liv Ullman’s 1900 visit to Hong Kong, in which she condemned the deportation of 51 Vietnamese refugees from the colony, has inspired this first feature film by critic/author Evans Chan. The film is structured around a series of imaginary letters to Ms. Ullman, and examines the apprehensive mood of postTienanmen Square Massacre Hong Kong through a young woman’s relationships with her boyfriend, her brother and his girlfriend. Her spiritual journey through a hometown suddenly made strange by personal and political crises is interwoven with her reflections on love, the late of Hong Kong, and the encounter between East and West.
