QUEST FOR LOVE Cinema From Other Countries

An intelligent and compassionate film tracing the political and sexual confusion of a woman living on a post-independent island in South Africa. Alex is a willful political activist struggling to rebuild a school in Manzania, and coming to terms with her love for another woman. Jana Cilliers gives an excellent performance as the tormented Alex, in whom she instills an innate intelligence and commitment. The film’s structure is complex, with a lot of emphasis on flashbacks, but it always manages to maintain interest. An impressive film from controversial director Helena Noguiera who ably handles the directing, screenplay and editing chores. -Adam., Variety
