TAMPOPO Tribute to Tom Garvin

Juzo ltami, with Tom Garvin’s help, has become the most popular Japanese director in America since Kurosawa. ltami’s first two films, The Funeral and Tampopo, had their Los Angeles premieres at the first AFI Fest in 1987. T he story concerns a pretty widow and her rundown noodle shop and how two friends help her make it an edible success. Written and directed by Juza ltami. With Nobuko Miyamoto, Tsutomu Yamazaki, Koji Yakusho. Japan, 1986, 117 min. Print courtesy of New Yorker Films. In Japanese with English subtitles.
