INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED (NEVINOST BEZ ZASTITE) Tribute to Dusan Makavejev: Genuine Revolutionary

The Sunday Telegraph called lnnlicence Unprotected “a hilarious piece of cinematic collage that manages to be an affectionate spoofing of old movies, political history of Yugoslavia and satirical comment on the country’s new muscleman and escapologist, President Tito.” “In 1942, a professional strong man named Aleksic intermingled documentary footage of his own acrobatic feats with stretches of wide-eyed melodrama in a Serbian film of the same name. This pre-Godardian recipe clearly fascinates Makavejev, who has added further layers of meaning to the old film with up-to-date interviews with Aleksic and a selection of wartime newsreels. The result, says the director is “a peculiar cinematic time machine”, and a portrait of Aleksic who appears in real life to be every bit as vain and courageous as he was in the film.” -Peter Cowie
