SCANDAL Tribute to Miramax: Ten Years of Hits

Closing the 1989 AFI Los Angeles Film Festival, Scandal was a sexy, politically charged, early hit for Miramax. “In 1963 the sensational revelations that a good-time girl had been having affairs with a British cabinet minister and a Soviet naval attache helped bring down the U.K.’s conservative government. In Scandal, man-about-town Ward (John Hurt) meets young showgirl Keeler (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer) and 16-year-old Mandy Rice -Davies (Bridget Fonda). At the same time John Profumo (Ian McKellen), the secretary of state for war, falls for Keeler. Director Michael Caton-Jones handles the film well, and obviously was not over-awed by his subject or his cast.” -Variety
