PARAJANOV European Cinema

Persecuted by Soviet authorities throughout his life for his non-conformist lifestyle, Armenian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov ( The Color of Pomegranates) created films with a revolutionary visual style. In this fascinating documentary portrait of the legendary filmmaker, director Ron Holloway attempts to unravel some of the mysteries about the artist and his unique vision of the world. The film explores Parajanov’s attempts to circumvent dogmatism at Moscow’s Kiev Studios and the years he spent in prison because of his radical political views. Using a series of interviews, personal photographs, and film clips from Parajanov’s documentaries and features, Holloway has created a visual essay that reveals the outspoken Parajanov to have been as controversial as his films.
