THE KINGDOM OF ZYDECO U.S. Independents - Documentaries

Robert Mugge, one of America’s finest makers of music documentaries, examines the black Creole music scene of Southwest Louisiana and its attempts to name a new leader. After the death of the genre’s latest king, a struggle ensues over the crown. The core of the film is a joint concert appearance by Boozoo Chavis and Bea Jacque, billed as the battle of the contenders for the crown. But the film is as much about storytelling as it is about performance, with tall tales told all around. Appropriately enough, the film’s climax documents the actual crowning of a new king of zydeco. The music is hot-and the controversy even hotter.-Shown with Liz Roberts’ Dogumentary (U.S.A., 1994, 9 min.), a tale told from the point of view of a dog as he tries to make sense of the human world.
