THE TROUBLES WE’VE SEEN: A HISTORY OF JOURNALISM IN WARTIME (1ST AND 2ND JOURNEYS) 45/95 Hungarian Film Series

Eminent French documentarian Marcel Ophuls ( The Sorrow and the Pity, Hotel Terminus: The
Life and Times of Klaus Barbie) has turned his eye to Bosnia from the perspective of the journalists
who cover the war. From 1993 to 1994 Ophuls made four trips to war-torn Sarajevo. He
examines the high-risk physical aspects of war reporting (over 40 have died to date), and the
impact they have on public opinion given the nature of an audience who does not want to become
emotionally involved and is desensitized to violence. While tracing the history of war coverage
from the Crimean War to the present, Ophuls gives us an enlightening observation of the cynicism,
hypocrisy and cowardice of European governments.
