MIRACLE ALLEY (ELL CALLEJON DE LOS MILAGROS) A Tribute to Contemporary Mexican Cinema

We are proud to open the TRIBUTE CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN CINEMA with the film most
honored this year by the Mexican Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Adapted from a
book by Egyptian Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz, the film’s three stories take place in downtown
Mexico City’s Miracle Alley. The first story is that of Rutilio, a family man in his fifties, who one
day discovers a sudden and irresistible attraction towards homosexuality. This sexual awakening
takes him through a path of renewed vitality, but leads him, unavoidably, to domestic catastrophe.
The second story is that of Alma, a beautiful young girl whose love lyaves Mexico to work as an
illegal alien in the United States with the promise to return one day with enough money to offer her
the life she deserves. Unable to wait, Alma gives in to the seductions of a cruel and elegant pimp
who turns her into an expensive prostitute. In the final story Susanita, the landlady, is an incorrigible
romantic spinster who lives with the eternal dream of getting married to whomever will take her.
