MAIRI MHOR: HER LIFE AND SONGS British Film Showcase

Mary McPherson wrote the first of her great songs, “The Speakers of English” when she was
fifty-one. From that moment until she died twenty-five years later, she poured out some of the
most eloquent, lyrical and best-loved songs in the Gaelic language, and many indeed consider
her to be’the greatest Gaelic poet of the nineteenth century Shot on the beautiful Isle of Skye,
this powerful story features some of the most stunning photography of the Scottish Highlands
and a soundtrack that entrances the viewer and lingers long in the memory, hauntingly sung by
Catherine-Ann MacPhee. Showing with John Boorman’s Two Nudes Bathing (Ireland, 1995,
33 min.) (see entry under European Union Films from Cannes).
