CUTTING IT SHORT (POSTRIZINY) Czech Literature in Czech Film

Pure delight, as progress comes to a rural brewery in the ’20s: manager Jiri Schmitzer’s sidecarred
motorcycle sometimes refuses to stop; his stentorian-voiced brother keeps extending that
visit; and the brewery’s board fusses over his accounts; but then it’s time for a pork sausage feast
cooked by his beautiful free spirited wile, Magda Vasaryova (of Marketa Lazarova, and later the
Czechoslovak ambassador to Austria). Vasaryova gives a “gorgeous performance as a beauty
delightin,g in her own bounteous sensuality”-Tom Milne. Adapted from Hrabal’s memoir of his
parents, this is “Menzel’s best lilm”-David Shipman. An absolute must-see!
