BETWEEN SUMMERS (SOMMAREN) European Union Films From Cannes

Without using any of the conventional images of grief, the director has created a sobering but
beautiful interpretation of the worst tragedy that can befall a family. One hot summer afternoon
while Torun is napping, her sister Ellen takes Torun’s two children to the beach. Ellen dozes off
for a few minutes and one of the children drowns. Unable to express her grief, Torun expects her
husband to punish her, but he only offers love and support, driving Torun to promiscuity which,
not surprisingly, does not fulfill her. By the following summer, Torun and her family return to the
beach, and although their lives have changed immensely, the sand and waves remain the same.
