KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER International Cinema

An epic love story based on Nobel prize winner Sigrid Undset’s beloved 1928 trilogy “The Bridal
Wreath.” Medieval Norway is gorgeously filmed by Sven Nykvist. Kristin, the innocent and virtuous
daughter of a prominent landowner, has gone to spend a year in a convent after an attempted rape.
Although she is promised in an arranged marriage, she meets and cannot resist Erland, a womanizing
knight who is living with a married woman with whom he has two children: They fall in
love, and must fight every obstacle on their long road towards marriage. The two lovers win each
other in the end, but leave behind a trail of hate and sorrow, murder and suicide. After a 40 year
deadlock between American and Norwegian rightsholders, director Liv Ullman (Sofie), who had
originally hoped to play Kristin on screen, finally is able to bring this magnificent romance to
audiences worldwide.
