SHARAKU International Cinema

A stunning depiction of life in ancient Tokyo (then called Eda), this is the sumptuously told story
of the real life wood-block artist who became the first ukiyoe (floating world) artist Sharaku, who
dared to depict his subjects in a realistic manner, verging on caricature. Since little is known about
Sharaku in his later years, veteran director Masahiro Shinoda uses intensive research and imagination
to create a fictional account of the artist as a small time kabuki theater performer who,
crippled in an accident, is relegated to street performer and set painter. With superb costumes,
sets and cinematography, this is a visual feast not to be missed.
