WAR STORIES International Cinema

With astonishing candor and often refreshing humor, seven elderly women face the camera and
reminisce about their lives during World War II. Using newsreel clips, popular songs of the era
and vivid contributions from the storytellers’ photo albums, what is discovered in these stories is
the emotion that has long been repressed in pain, smothered in shame or disregarded as
insignificantly personal in the context of the international disaster of war. As the film progresses
the women’s frankness becomes more and more surprising, particularly in light of the fact that
this was a generation which was taught that certain subjects were private and not to be discussed.
