LAND OF DARKNESS New at Press Time

As the closing event of the Tribute to Contemporary Mexican Cinema, the AFI Fest is proud to
present this extraordinary debut film. Shot in the San Gabriel mountain range near Los Angeles
with Mexican funds, this film cost less than $20,000. During the violent chaos of the Mexican
Revolution, ‘a young, idealistic priest becomes the victim of mistaken identity and is forcibly
recruited to the federal army. Thrust into the turmoil of war through the blind cruelty of the ruthless
Captain Acuna, the horrified clergyman is forced through an unmarked door in his very soul.
Superbly photographed and emotionally precise, Land of Darkness heralds a formidable new talent
who has been compared to director Andrei Tarkovsky and cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa.
