SALÓN MÉXICO A Tribute to Contemporary Mexican Cinema

A crime has been committed in the 1930’s
Mexico City dance hall Salon Mexico, an
oasis of lovers dancing the danzon. In one
of its dressing rooms two people lie dead:
the taxi dancer, Mercedes, and her lover,
the robber and pimp known as Paco.
Police inspector Castellon is brought on to
investigate, and he proceeds to question
everyone involved in the case: Almendrita,
Paco’s other lover, Mercedes’ best friends,
La Jaibita, policeman Guadalupe Salazar,
who asked Mercedes to marry him, and
American composer Aaron Copland, a
current regular of the night spot. Framed
thus as a police story, Salon Mexico
allows every character to disclose their
inner feelings-making them accomplices
of the crime that shocked them all-and
serves as a fascinating recreation of an
era long gone.
