HERE ON EARTH (AQUI NA TERRA) A Tribute to Contemporary Portuguese Cinema

40-ish economist Luis Miguel Cintra loses
his father then starts going to pieces, hearing
sounds no one else does, quitting his
job, even alienating his beautiful doctor
wife Jessica Weiss. Meanwhile, far away
in the country, poor lost kids Rita Dias and
Pedro Hestnes get mixed up in a murder
and have to pay outside the law. Two totally
unrelated stories [although Cintra hears
sounds (not words) from the country world]
until, as the troubled economist’s own
undiagnosable ·problems reach their crisis,
he becomes “the enlightened messenger”
that draws everything into a transcendental
conclusion. Dostoyevsky crossed with
Treyer and Bresson from a director whose
ideal is to “film small events in order to
convey universal ideas.” -Michael Jeck,
