SIGNAL LEFT, TURN RIGHT (DA ZUO DENG, XIANG XOU ZHUAN) Asia

The third in Huang’s “Urban Attitude” trilogy,
Signal Left, Turn Right is a sharp
social satire on the contradictions of modern
Chinese life in the face of open door
economic policy. Using the automobile as
a symbol of prestige and mobility in a
changing society, the film is set in a policerun
driving school a la military style. Here,
we are introduced to a microcosm of
Chinese society-a motley group of students
and teachers from different walks of
life-who all have one thing in common:
the pursuit of a fast buck, and the desire to
buck the system while they’re at it. Both a
witty expose and a vision of unity amid
societal upheaval, Huang’s latest film
proves an appropriate and moving conclusion
to his lauded trilogy.
