HAMSUN European Union Film Showcase

This film chronicles the troubling and fantastic
life of Norwegian Nobel laureate
Knut Hamsun. Increasingly nationalistic in
his writings, the aging writer openly supports
the Nazi party during World War II.
A known personality around the world,
Hamsun takes advantage of his international
contacts to promote Hitler’s cause.
When Norway is occupied by the Nazis,
Hamsun urges his countrymen to lay down
their arms. By his side on the stage of
world politics is his actress wife Marie
who becomes an increasingly i?portan?
representative in the face of her husband’s
worsened hearing. Considered a traitor
by his fellow Norwegians and rendered
more and more isolated in his political
dealings, Hamsun loses sight of the consequences
of his actions. A political drama
as well as a story of a passionate marriage,
Hamsun explores the intricate relationships
between art, personal history,
politics and love.
