TO SPEAK THE UNSPEAKABLE: THE MESSAGE OF ELIE WIESEL (DIRE L’INDICIBLE: LA QUETE D’ELIE WIESEL) Hungary

“In his own lifetime, Elie Wiesel has
become a symbol. His name cannot be dissociated
from 20th Century Jewish Destiny
and the memory of the victims of the
Holocaust. He is their living conscience …. ”
Thus states Judit Elek of a most extraordinary
teacher, writer and winner of the
Nobel Peace Prize. This documentary follows
Wiesel from his boyhood home in
Transylvania, through the haunting rooms
of Auschwitz-Birkenau and on to
Buchenwald. We are introduced to the
town of Sighet, which once cooperated
with the deportation of Jews and now welcomes
the celebrated Wiesel as a local
hero. We are told by Wiesel of his love for
his parents and younger sister, and of his
last recollections of each of them. Elie
Wiesel’s generous offering of his community’s
experiences stands in tribute to one
human being who boldly attempts to speak
the unspeakable, to bear witness to history.
