PRETTY VILLAGE, PRETTY FLAME (LEPA SELA LEPA GORE) Yugoslavia

Based on a story written from eye-witness
testimony, Pretty Village Pretty Flame follows
one incident in the lives of one group
of Serbian soldiers during the conflict in
Yugoslavia. In the spring of 1992 a group
of men found both refuge and imprisonment
in a tunnel as they hid from Croatian
soldiers outside. Blocking both exits, they
bided their time, waiting for an opportunity
to escape. In time, they began to converse
with the men outside who, too, were
awaiting their chance. For ten days, they
got by without any extra rations of food or
water, until one night the guards’ slumber
made escape possible. Pretty Village
Pretty Flame is Christine Spines’ (Premiere
Magazine) Critic’s Choice
