AFTERGLOW Closing Night Gala

Set in the city of Montreal, Alan Rudolph’s
AFTERGLOW is a romantic comedy-drama that paints a wry
comic portrait of two modern marriages drifting toward the
rocks. Lucky (Nick Nolte) is a contractor whose business
owes its success to his skill at repair and to his amorous
attentions to the lonely women who hire him. His marriage
however has fallen on hard times – his wife Phyllis (Julie
Christie), a former B-movie actress, passes her time in a
nostalgic haze watching her old films and turning a blind eye
to his infidelities, but resists his attempts to bring romance
back into their life together.
Across town, a young married couple Marianne (Lara
Flynn Boyle) & Jeffrey (Jonny Lee Miller) are going through
problems of their own. Marianne wants desperately to have a
baby, but her self-centered, corporate climber husband has no
plans for anything but his career. Frustrated by this stalemate,
she goes about tracking her fertility cycles, while Jeffrey
tracks the stock market.
When Marianne hires Lucky to fix up her apartment and
build a nursery for her hoped for baby, the attention he pays
to her chums up long neglected emotions, drawing them
together to begin an affair. Their suspicious jealous spouses
separately try to trail the unfaithful pair, and discover each
other instead. AFTERGLOW poignantly captures both the
sadness and revitalization of love. Rudolph gracefully etches
the seductiveness of romance, as his two lonely couples
change partners. Julie Christie and Nick Nolte give two of the
best performances of their career.
Join the stars at this special Gala Premiere in what is
considered to be the best place in town to experience a
movie. The film will be followed by a sumptuous dessert
reception. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance.
