TRANSFORMER Documentary

One of the most playfully profound
filmmakers working today, Lars Von Trier
has always delighted in wallowing in the
profane while tricking his viewers into a
transcendence of vision. Stig Bjorkman,
longtime Danish film critic and author,
here spends an hour examining the career
of Denmark’s most notorious director.
Using scenes from all of Von Trier’s films,
as well as rare glimpses of the director’s
8mm movies shot as a teenager,
Bjorkman interweaves testimonies from
actors and meditations from the director
about his life and work, revealing that
Von Trier always writes his own phobias
into his script and that at his debut at the
Cannes Film Festival he wore the same
tuxedo owned by Carl Th. Dreyer in 1928.
This documentary is essential viewing for
any student ‘Of contemporary world
cinema.
