GEORGICA European Film Showcase

This Estonian film ravishes you with the simplicity of its story
and the competence of its imagery. Jakub is an old preacher
who lives alone on an island, until one day a young mute boy
comes to live with him. The film slowly unfolds its riches,
sensuously detailing Jakub’s routines for staying sane and
getting his work done. He lavishes affection on the bees he
keeps and the horse he rides … Patterns of thought and memory
are mapped exquisitely. The film works like a poem, creating
what Valery calls “a language inside a language.” A whole
parallel reality is suggested, a reality … shadowy and magical. .. –
