GODS AND MONSTERS Galas

On May 29, 1957, the lifeless body of retired film director James Whale, director
of the FRANKENSTEIN movies, was found, sportily attired in his favorite suit, at
the bottom of his swimming pool.
In this fictional account, Whale has recently suffered a mild stroke, and is
attended to by his housekeeper. Now retired, he is often haunted by painful
memories but amuses himself by painting at his poolside studio. When a new
yard man appears one day, Whale can’t hide his interest. He charms the young
man into posing for a portrait, and the two begin an exchange of stories and
memories that intensify as the time passes.
Ian McKellen sparkles in his portrayal of Whale, creating a portrait of a man not
easily reconciled to his failing health and loss of control over his own life.
Brendan Fraser is perfectly cast as the young man who is slowly drawn into an
outlandish and unfamiliar world.
