In 1983, the Oscar-winning documentary HE MAKES ME FEEL LIKE DANCIN’ captured the exuberance and commitment of public school children enrolled in Jacques d’Amboise’s innovative dance program, the National Dance Institute. Using footage from the original film to identify the participants, WHO’S DANCIN’ NOW? revisits the alumni – now it their twenties – to discover how their lives were impacted by their NDI experience. Along the way, the film also captures the enthusiastic rehearsals and performances of current NDI classes.
D’Amboise has received many honors including the Presidential “Lifetime Achievement in the Arts,” a 1990 MacArthur Fellowship and the first Producer’s Circle Award for public service in enriching the lives of New York City children. Yet “art-in-education” and after-school programs remain imperiled across the country WHO’S DANCIN’ NOW? is as much a call for public dedication to arts education as it is a trip down memory lane and across generations.
