THE LIGHTHOUSE (EL FARO) Latin Cinema Series

Set in scenic South America, this powerful story captures the invincible bond between two orphaned sisters. Told in an intimate, unassuming style, THE LIGHTHOUSE portrays the sisters’ courageous alliance against an uncertain future, resulting in a profound understanding of love and, ultimately, death.

A car accident leaves seventeen-year-old Carmela, maimed and left to care for her sister Aneta, an introspective eight year old. The two girls move from town to town, through various odd jobs and Carmela’s troubled love affairs. At one point, Carmela is so broken-hearted, she contemplates suicide from the perch of a mythic lighthouse, a significant motif. Ten years later, Aneta discovers her first romance, while Carmela continues to spiral further into depression. Carmela’s desperate and stifling hold on Aneta drives the sisters toward a tragic yet inevitable end.
