GEMINI (SOSEIJI) Official Selection

Distinguished by the extraordinary visuals for which he is justifiably celebrated, the latest film from director Shinya Tsukamoto is an atmospheric, eerie exploration of identity, destiny and circumstance.

Dr. Yukio Daitokuji seems to have it all in 1910 Tokyo. He runs a very successful surgery and is happily married to Rin, his beautiful and enigmatic new wife. Their bourgeois lifestyle starts to unravel when, one by one, Yu.kio’s parents meet with bizarre and suspicious deaths. Then Yukio is attacked by a man who appears to be his double. The man throttles Yukio and throws him down an unused well in the woods, giving him just enough sustenance to keep him alive. As the mysterious assailant calmly takes over every aspect of Yukio’s life – including his wife – complex temporal strands of past and present build to a surprising revelation. Meanwhile Yukio survives at the bottom of the well where he vacillates between suicidal despair and a determination to have revenge on his dark doppelganger.
