THE ALCOHOL YEARS Documentary Competition

In this stylish, revealing film that reshapes the boundaries of the documentary art form, British filmmaker Carol Morley recounts five self-destructive years of her life in Manchester in the early 1980s.

THE ALCOHOL YEARS is a lyrical retrieval of that era, highlighted by music by the Buzzcocks and New Order, in which Morley’s rediscovered friends and acquaintances confront her and the camera with tales of her alcohol-induced promiscuity. Even more poignant is the absence of Morley herself, who remains behind the camera and is only revealed through quick home movie vignettes and old photos.

Compelling, uncensored and truly brave, this cutting-edge experimental documentary leaves you with a sense of nostalgia for 80s pop culture as well as questions about teenage behavior.
