HENRY & JUNE Philip Kaufman Retrospective

While hitchhiking through Europe as a young man, Kaufman smuggled a copy of Henry Miller hidden in his underwear through customs. Years later, he tried to get some of Miller’s sensibility past the MPAA, and the result was the only major studio film to be released with the NC-17 rating. Based on the diaries of Anais Nin, who encouraged Kaufman’s early ambitions as a filmmaker, HENRY AND JUNE recounts the flowering of Nin’s sexuality and her fateful liaison with the expatriate American novelist and his enigmatic wife, June.
