THE WHITE DAWN Philip Kaufman Retrospective

In the waning days of the 19th century,
three shipwrecked whalers (Timothy
Bottoms, Warren Oates and Louis
Gossett Jr.) are rescued by a band of
Eskimos in the Canadian Arctic. James
Houston’s novel was filmed entirely on
location with a supporting cast of local
Eskimos. THE WHITE DAWN is both an
epic adventure story of survival and an
intimate, amusing, haunting tale of the
tragic encounter between two cultures.
