PUSHING HANDS (TUI SHOU) Ang Lee Retrospective

Ang Lee’s first feature film, PUSHING HANDS, tells the story of Master Chu, a retired Chinese Tai-Chi master who moves to New York to live with his son’s family, including his American wife and their son. It’s a comedy of manners about the conflict between a high-pressure New York lifestyle and the traditional way of the Tai-Chi. PUSHING HANDS is the first in Ang’s “Father Knows Best” trilogy, and introduces Sihung Lung in the kind of gentle role he portrays throughout the series. In this film, Ang demonstrates the humor and insight into the human condition that would become the hallmark of his future work.

PUSHING HANDS was nominated for nine Golden Horse Awards, the Taiwanese equivalent of our Academy Awards®.
