ABC AFRICA Documentary Competition

From acclaimed Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, ABC AFRICA is a powerfully cinematic film capturing the plight of thousands of children whose parents have died of AIDS.

In ABC AFRICA, Kiarostami returns to the examination of children’s issues that was present in his earlier films, continuing his exploration of life and death that began in LIFE AND NOTHING MORE.

In March of 2000, at the request of the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development, Abbas Kiarostami and his assistant, Seifollah Samadian, arrived in Kampala, Uganda. Their cameras capture and caress the faces of thousands of children, all orphans, whose parents have died of AIDS. It records tears and laughter, music and silence, life and death. It attests to Africa’s sunny resilience to so much suffering and disease.
