ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS (ITALIENSK FOR BEGYNDERE) European Showcase

Awarded the Silver Bear at the 2001 Berlin International Film Festival, ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS takes the Dogme rules in a new direction, where the script, rather than the photographic style, contains delightful surprises.

The story follows six lost souls searching for love. Soon after arriving in a small gray town, a young, sensitive minister named Andreas (played by Anders W. Berthelsen, MIFUNE) is persuaded to sign up for Italian lessons. There he meets five other singles who together change the course of their lives. Through language, they find companionship and ultimately happiness.

The fifth Danish Dog.?e ’95 film and arguably the most enjoyable, ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS adheres to the Dogme rules of a handheld camera, natural light and shooting on location that creates a fresh method of filmmaking, allowing the script and improvisations to provide the spontaneity while celebrating the characters and the actor. ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS sets a completely original, touching and very funny tone.
