IN THE BEDROOM International Competition

Todd Field’s unforgettable feature debut starring Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, Marisa Tomei and Nick Stahl, is a delicate, suspenseful film about class, loss and getting on with your life.

Based on a short piece of fiction by author Andre Dubus, the film is set on the coast of Maine and tells the story of a couple whose only child is involved in a love affair that ends tragically. It is also the plight of the parents’ evolving response to the loss. When director Todd Field read Dubus’ story, he said his words spoke to him like the voice of “a distant male relative.” This connection is evident in the subtle, powerful caverns of his screenplay, co-written with Robert Festinger.

At the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, a Special Jury Prize for acting was awarded to Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson. IN THE BEDROOM is a compelling, hypnotic meditation on class, loss and coping with the loss of a loved one.
