MIRACLE (MIRAKEL) Screen Education

The screening of MIRACLE is part of AFl’s Screen Education Program, in which students from public high schools in Los Angeles County are invited to participate in AFI FEST 2001 programs through curriculum, special screenings and other educational opportunities. MIRACLE is accompanied by a curriculum on the evolution and use of subtitles in international cinema, with the intention of increasing awareness, receptiveness and general comfort among young people in viewing subtitles.

MIRACLE is a musical adventure with a cheeky mix of farce, realism and fantasy. Dennis P is an average sort of boy. Naturally he has his problems, but that’s not unusual for a boy his age. Dennis P’s father died recently but nevertheless Dennis P thinks his mother-who spends all her time crying-has been grieving too long. Dennis P is jealous of his best friend, Mick, who like Dennis P is in love with Karen Elise. However, worst of all, Dennis P still hasn’t hit puberty. One day an angel-looking suspiciously like Dennis P’s late father issues to Dennis P a license by which he can perform medium grade miracles. However, there are strings attached.

Natasha Arthy is a filmmaker who understands the craft and whose careful structure, humor and fantasy leave a lasting imprint on our hearts and memory.
