THE SMITH FAMILY International Documentary Competition

Kim and Steve Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah, are seemingly the picture-perfect Morman couple. Proud parents of two bright and loving teenagers, active in the Morman community and absolutely devoted to each other and their family, the Smiths seem nearly flawless.

But, on their ninth wedding anniversary, Steve reveals his sexual affairs with men. Years later, after clinging to her Mormon conviction of a “forever family,” Kim rises above her emotional turmoil to renew her commitment to her husband, deciding that Steve’s behavior resulted from sexual molestation in his childhood. However, just as their lives are coming back together, Kim discovers she is HIV-positive and Steve is dying of AIDS.

Told through interviews, home video footage and captured moments of candid family life, THE SMITH FAMILY is a remarkable tale of faith, commitment, love and hardship.
