THE INHERITANCE Latin Cinema Series

Its easy to see why THE INHERITANCE was such a hit at the Brazilian box office. Daniel Filho’s vibrant comedy about four vastly different women reunited by the death of their mother perfectly captures the confounding dynamics and unique bond that exist between sisters.

Upon her mother’s death, sensible middle sibling Selma gathers her sisters in Rio fro the funeral and to settle their mother’s affairs – principally, the sale of her apartment and their childhood home. In often-contentious attendance are eldest daughters Lucia, who abandonded both Brazil and her young son years ago to marry a Frenchman, brash, single mom Regina; and Laura, the brooding, misunderstood baby.

Skillful performances make this film a captivating delight, especially Glória Pires as the restrained, yet sultry, Selma. If this is considered a chick flick, at least it’s got plenty of meat on the bone, as these are hearty, headstrong, distinctly individual, gloriously human women.
