THE IPCRESS FILE Michael Caine Retrospective

Len Deighton’s reluctant anti-hero Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) burst onto the spy-crazed film world of the 1960s. Unlike James Bond, however, here was a British spy with a working-class accent and horn-rimmed glasses who really didn’t want to be a spy in the first place.

In THE IPCRESS FILE, Palmer’s beat is a cold, rainy London where he spends his nights in. unheated flats spying on subversives. Eventually, he’s assigned to get to the bottom of the kidnapping subsequent “brain-draining.” of a nuclear physicist, all the while being reminded by his superiors that it’s this or prison for Harry. Produced by veteran Bond producer Harry Saltzman, the film also features a haunting score by another Bond veteran, composer John Barry.
