RABBIT-PROOF FENCE Special Screening

Over the past several years, Australia has been taking measures-on both governmental and social levels-to address the agony of the “Stolen Generation” of aboriginal children forcibly removed from their families. Director Phillip Noyce’s RABBIT-PROOF FENCE is based on the true story of three girls, aged 14, 10 and eight, who fled a state-run dormitory in 1931.

Having been abandoned by white fathers, Molly Craig, her younger sister Daisy and their cousin Gracie are wrenched from their aboriginal mothers and taken 1,500 miles by train to the Moore River Native Settlement dormitories. But Molly’s intelligence can be neither crushed nor contained, and the girls quickly escape to begin their arduous journey home. Hot on their trail are an aboriginal tracker, Moodoo, and the Chief Protector of the aboriginal population, Riggs (Kenneth Branagh).

Based on a book by Molly’s daughter, Doris Pilkington, and supported by Peter Gabriel’s adaptation of Australian aboriginal music, RABBIT-PROOF FENCE makes a powerful, moving appeal for the justice and recognition due the Stolen Generation.
