South Africa’s official Oscar® selection for Best Foreign Language Film, comes from the director of SARAFINA! and CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY, and is also the first Zulu-language film ever released internationally.

Winner of the Human Rights Film Award at the 2004 Venice International Festival, YESTERDAY is a moving story of a young mother named Yesterday, breathtakingly portrayed by Leleti Khumalo (SARAFINA!), who falls ill and discovers that she is HIV-positive. Her husband, a migrant mineworker, refuses to accept this. Summoning up her hidden, strengths, Yesterday undertakes this new life with quiet heroism. Left to fend for herself and her young daughter, Beauty, she hopes that she will survive long enough to see her child go to school.

YESTERDAY is the first feature film to have the support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, becoming an important instrument in fighting the discrimination and stigma that is attached to the AIDS pandemic. Written and directed by Darrell James Roodt, YESTERDAY is a powerful and timely film-devoid of cliche and sentimentality-that challenges the viewer, adding another dimension to this already complex story.
