HELL (L’ ENFER) International Feature Competition

Director of the Academy Award®-winning NO MAN’S LAND, Danis Tanovic’s sophomore film HELL uses Dante’s Inferno as a point of departure, and turns into a compelling portrait of a family torn apart by events from the past.

The story unfolds character by character, introducing a mother who has been left in an elegant home in the countryside, and her three grown daughters, now mature adults with their own web of relationships. The first part of the film is quickly sketched, pulling together the pieces of the past. Then there is a man being released from jail and returning home-suddenly the incident that instigates the drama arrives.

Fueled by Tanovic’s fluid direction, HELL is a dynamically artistic film. Screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz’ world is full of complexity and balance, nuances of fate and free will resonating in the extraordinary performances of Emmanuelle Béart, Carole Bouquet and Karin Viard-tearing the veil away from everything that surrounds them.
