LIGHT WORK MOOD DISORDER AND HE WALKED AWAY: AN EVENING WITH JENNIFER REEVES Special Screenings

Soon after she began making short experimental works in 1990, Jennifer Reeves attracted attention for her bold and personal compositions. Her film CHRONIC is a haunting, romantic and tragic depiction of a self-destructive young girl who cuts herself to escape the emotional pain of her world. The combination of a semi-narrative drive and striking visual design (Reeves employed gorgeously grainy photography with hand-painted frames) won Reeves critical acclaim.

When she completed her first feature film THE TIME WE KILLED, it became the winner of the FIPRESCI Critics prize at the Berlin Film Festival, Outstanding Artistic Achievement at OUTFEST, and Best NY, NY Narrative Feature at Tribeca Film Festival. (Her prize for that was an original painting by Christopher Walken.)

Since 2003, Reeves has expanded her work as a “single-strand filmmaker ” by adding multiple-project ion film performance to her repertoire. These films combine found footage , Reeves’s original hand-painted works and a variety of other media and sound to create one-of-a-kind film events. AFI FEST is proud to host this performance by Reeves and bear witness to the amazing maturation of one of the most profound film artists of the last 15 years.
