EVERYBODY’S FINE Galas and Tributes

Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1990 classic STANNO TUTTI BENE told the story of a widower who, lonely during the holidays, embarked upon a tour of Italy to visit his children (who, appropriately in this bittersweet melodrama, were all named far Italian opera characters) Kirk Jones (WAKING NED) transplants the film to contemporary America, where extended families, separated by long distances, increasingly have became strangers to one another. Jones adapted the original screenplay co-written by Tornatore and Tonino Guerra (a collaborator with Fellini, Antonioni, Tarkovsky and Theo Angelopolous), focusing on an impromptu train trip taken by widower Frank (Robert De Niro, in the role originally played by Marcello Mastroianni) that leaves him learning more about his grown children than he ever expected Featuring a quartet of splendid performances (Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell and De Niro), this is a moving, deep and surprisingly funny exploration of the family ties that bind .
