OSLO, AUGUST 31 (OSLO, 31. AUGUST) New Auteurs

Caught in a downward spiral of his own creation, recovering addict Anders – with two weeks left in rehab – uses a day pass to return to Oslo, a city haunted by memory and regret. He drifts through the city streets, finding himself outside the bubble of nostalgia, unable to reconnect with the person he once was. As daylight fades, he sees fewer reasons to continue with the charade of his life, realizing just how little his ghost would linger for his parents, his friends and the women he once loved. Joachim Trier’s second feature is practically a call-and-response to his award-winning debut REPRISE, not a literal revisiting of the same characters, but a thematic bookend to them. Its tone is both somber and sweet, framed with a series of overheard voices and frozen moments as it charts Anders’ odyssey to its moving and elegiac conclusion.
