MELANCHOLIA is a psychological disaster film that could hove only come from the mind of Lars von Trier Promising no happy endings, MELANCHOLIA centers on sisters Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Justine is celebrating her marriage to Michael (Alexander Skarsgard) at Claire’s estate. Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a disaster, as Justine struggles with her depression and tries to make the best of it. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is on a collision course with Earth, which causes Claire to hove on emotional breakdown of her own. Dunst delivers a tour-de-force performance with a very row and honest portrayal of a woman bottling depression, while the film aesthetically mimics her struggle by shifting between stylized, romantic visuals and row, shaky handheld camerawork . With MELANCHOLIA, von Trier delivers not only his first foray into science fiction but one of the most visually stunning films of his career
