PINA Special Screenings

In 2009, legendary Germon choreographer Pino Bausch began to collaborate with Wim Wenders on this documentary film, but when she died suddenly that summer, Wenders was faced with the challenge of completing his portrait without its subject. And yet, despite her absence, he masterfully captures the art and life of Pina Bausch in this spectacular JD celebration of dance. Wenders interweaves interviews with the dancers in Bausch’s company Tonztheater Wuppertal , reflecting on the strengths that Pina saw in their dancing , with excerpts of them performing pieces she designed expressly for them, beautifully illuminating Bausch’s influence and artistry. Many of the performances unfold outdoors, in the streets and parks of Wuppertol, releasing Pino’s joyous physicality from the confines of the stage. Using the tool of 3D technology with extraordinary finesse, Wenders draws you into the performances in a way that is transcendental and sets a new precedent for filmed dance.
