COME OUT AND PLAY Midnight

A young couple on vacation takes a small boat to a picturesque island. On arrival, they find a strangely isolated world, one seemingly devoid of adults. At first, they shrug off the strangeness and think it’s nothing more than a traditional siesta. But soon it becomes clear that something horrible has happened and, if they want to survive and protect their unborn child, they must commit unthinkable atrocities. Makinov’s film is a remake of WHO CAN KILL A CHILD, a rarely seen film from the 1970s that has a special place in the heart of horror fans. COME OUT AND PLAY places its protagonists in an unthinkable situation with a horrific challenge in front of them. Thrillers usually cultivate horror in dark shadows, so it’s alarming to see the sun-soaked horrors of this island setting. Is there anything more horrific than the gleeful cheering of children in such circumstances?

Born in Belarus in the 1970s, the elusive director of COME OUT AND PLAY refuses to disclose his first and last name. His first exposure to filmmaking was as a focus puller in Russia and he later traveled to Mexico to study and shoot two documentary films. After what he describes as a near-death experience, he forged a new identity, referring to himself as Makinov.
