QUARTET Special Screenings

QUARTET tells the story of retired opera singers and lifelong chums Wilf and Reggie who, together with their former colleague Cissy, reside in the Beecham House retirement home.  At the home, the residents hold an annual fundraising concert on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday. This is usually a pleasant highlight of the year for the aging residents, but when Reggie’s ex Jean checks into the home, long buried skeletons and disputes begin to emerge. Personalities collide and it’s all the two old chums can do to keep things on the right course and honor the spirit of “the show must go on.” An adaptation of British playwright Ronald Harwood’s (THE DRESSER) eponymous play, QUARTET is an ambitious debut film from Dustin Hoffman whose enduring skill and knowledge of acting and filmmaking come to fruition as he expertly directs an ensemble of celebrated British actors, including Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon.

The 27th AFI Life Achievement Award recipient, two-time Academy Award® winner and seven-time nominee first caught the world’s attention for his role as Benjamin Braddock in THE GRADUATE. Hoffman starred in MIDNIGHT COWBOY, LENNY, TOOTSIE and WAG THE DOG. He won the Oscar® in 1979 for his role in KRAMER VS. KRAMER and in 1988 for RAIN MAN. QUARTET marks his directorial debut.
